The state of New Jersey offers multiple options to acquire your HSE (high school equivalency) diploma. Not only introduced New Jersey the new GED® exam, it also allowed testing centers to use the alternative exams TASC and HiSET. In most states, these alternatives are offered both on paper and on a computer, but New Jersey decided that in the state, only computer-based testing is possible. This actually makes sense because you won’t find many jobs anymore that will not require some sort of computer and keyboarding literacy.

Testing centers are deciding which of the three exam(s) they will use, so check with a testing site near you for details. Not all New Jersey test centers offer all three options. All across New Jersey, there are facilities where you can get properly prepared, and online programs may provide great learning opportunities as well. You will also find study materials at your community library and the local bookstore will also have prep books for your HSE (High School Equivalency) exam.

The GED exam has four modules (independent subtests) that you need to complete within two years. This only applies to the GED exam. The testing fields are Language (Reasoning through Language Arts), Social Studies, Math (Mathematical Reasoning), and Science. The HiSET and TASC are not modular and have five subtests as the section Language includes separate reading and writing tests.

New Jersey High School Equivalency Testing Requirements

  • Applicants don’t hold a secondary education degree
  • Applicants are not registered for another education program
  • The minimum age in New Jersey is 18 but 16 and 17-year olds may also qualify if they have permission from their school board and a parent or guardian
  • HSE testing in New Jersey is only for state residents

The New Jersey High School Equivalency diploma is equivalent to a standard HS diploma and accepted as such by virtually all US employers, schools of higher education, and government organizations. The New Jersey GED exam costs $120 and the HiSET and TASC alternatives come with a slightly more affordable price tag. Not only will the credential result in far better-paying employment options (holders of the degree will make some $9.500 more per year than workers without the degree), it will also give you the chance to earn a college degree to work towards a brighter future!

All three HSE exams are challenging and it is crucial to get fully prepared. All across New Jersey, you can find locations where you have the chance to become properly prepared to take the TASC, GED, or HiSET confidently and nowadays, there are also pretty sophisticated online courses that may be perfect for students with busy schedules. There is NO online HSE testing option. For all three exams, you must report to one of New Jersey’s official testing sites and take the exam in person. HiSET, TASC, and GED contents are quite similar, so a good GED prep course will also do the job for the other two alternatives.

The GED exam passing score is 145 on each of the four subtests. 145-164 equals high school level, 165-174 indicates you’re college-ready and a 175-200 score will bring you also up to 20 college credits. On the TASC exam (five tests) you must attain at least a 500 score on each test (out of a possible 800) and your essay score must be no less than 2 out of 8. The HiSET exam requires you to attain at least a score of 8 (out of 20) on each test, an essay score of at least 2 (also out of 8) and your overall result must be no less than 45.
