Adults who were not able to complete their high school education can take the HSE (high school equivalency) exam and earn their HSE diploma. In New Mexico, two options are offered for that purpose, the GED® (General Education Education) exam and the HiSET (short for High School Equivalency Test). The GED is a fully computerized exam whereas the HiSET is offered in both a computerized and a paper-based version. It won’t be long though before computer-based testing will be the standard as there is hardly any job anymore that does not require basic keyboarding and computer skills.
HSE testing centers can decide on the exam(s) they administer and not all testing sites offer both options yet so check with an HSE testing site in your area for details. There are numerous locations in New Mexico where you have the chance to become properly prepared and courses offered over the internet may provide a great learning opportunity, especially for people with busy schedules and those in remote areas. Also, your local library or bookstore will offer various options to help you get all set for the New Mexico GED or HiSET exam.
The GED test comes with four independent modules (subtests) that must be completed within two years, an option that not applies to the HiSET exam. The four GED tests are in Math (Mathematical Reasoning), Literacy (Reasoning through Language Arts), Science, and Social Studies. The HiSET has five subtests; the section Literacy comes with separate writing and reading subtests.
New Mexico High School Equivalency Testing Requirements
- Applicants cannot already hold a secondary education degree
- Applicants cannot be registered for another school program
- In New Mexico, you must be 18 years to qualify, but 16 & 17-year old applicants may qualify if they hold permission from a parent or guardian and their school district
- The New Mexico HSE test is open to non-residents as well
The New Mexico HSE diploma is the equivalency of a common high school diploma. It is accepted as such by practically all North American educational institutions and employers. The New Mexico GED test costs $80 for the entire exam of $20 per individual module and the HiSET alternative will set you back $75. The HSE degree will definitely result in better employment options, their income will be some $9.500 higher annually compared to those who don’t hold the degree, and it also qualifies for a college education. All in all, the HSE diploma will bring you a far brighter future!
All two options are challenging exams and it is imperative to become fully prepared. All over New Mexico, you can find numerous locations that offer guidance to get all geared up to take the GED or HiSET confidently. There are also some pretty sophisticated courses offered online for HiSET or GED preparation. But please bear in mind that there are no online options for the HiSET or GED exam itself. For both exams, you are required to come to one of New Mexico’s official HSE testing centers to take the tests in person. The contents of the HiSET and GED are pretty similar, so a GED preparatory course will also get you all set for the HiSET exam.
The passing score for each GED subtest is 145 and if your result is in the 145-164 range, your score equals high school level. In the 165-174 range, you are so-called college-ready and when your results are in the 175-200 range, you will additionally receive college credits. On the HiSET exam, you are required to attain a score of at least 8 out of a possible 20, your essay score must be no less than 2 out of a possible 8, and your total score cannot be less than 45.
