If you want to earn a high school equivalency (HSE) diploma in New York State, you will need to pass the five tests of the TASC (Test Assessing Secondary Completion) exam that replaced the GED® (General Education Development) in January 2014.

The TASC exam is available both on a computer and on paper whereas the new GED is only offered in a computer-based format. The five TASC testing fields are Literacy Writing, Literacy Reading, Social Studies, Science, and Mathematics.

The New York High School Equivalency Diploma is the equivalency of a regular high school degree and is recognized as such by virtually all U.S. educational institutions, employers, and governmental agencies.

New York State High School Equivalency Testing Requirements

  • You must not have a high school or equivalent diploma.
  • You are not partaking in another school program.
  • The minimum age to take the TASC exam in New York is 16. Applicants 16 and 17 years old need parental consent and be officially withdrawn from school.

New York State is one of just four states where HSE (High School Equivalency) testing is entirely subsidized for state residents. The five tests will take around 7 1/2 hours to complete and includes writing an essay. The testing results of the TASC exam will usually be available some five weeks after completing the tests.

TASC testing is free in New York State and most prep sites provide preparatory classes for free as well. The TASC passing score is 500 out of 800 on all five subtests. The essay needs to have at least a score of two points out of a possible eight. So your total TASC score needs to be at least 2500 points.

Because the state offers HSE testing for free, the exam is available only to state residents. The TASC is quite challenging so be wise and attend a prep course (offered all across the state) or follow a good TASC prep course over the internet to get properly prepared for the New York State high school equivalency test. TASC testing is done at an official testing center, there is NO online HSE testing possibility.
